Korvai began not with a business plan, but with a question: why is it so difficult to find Indian handcrafted clothing that feels modern, considered, and truly made to last? The answer, it turned out, was curation. And curation requires conviction.
The label takes its name from the Korvai weaving technique — an ancient method from Kanchipuram where the body and border of a saree are woven separately and then interlocked by hand, thread by thread, without a single knot. This is the metaphor at Korvai's heart: the invisible labour that makes something beautiful.
From Kochi, Kerala, the label brings together handcrafted sarees and couture apparel — sourced from weaving communities across India, and designed entirely in-house.

Celia Palathinkal conceived Korvai from a deeply personal place. Growing up in Kerala with a family rooted in Indian textile culture, she was drawn early to the quiet dignity of handloom — the way a well-woven fabric carries the time and thought of the person who made it.
Korvai began in 2019 with a focus on intricate brocade Banarasi sarees — bringing back a love for this tradition in Kerala. The label has since evolved into embroidered sarees, Kanjivaram silk, the apparel line, and seasonal editorial collections. The embroidered sarees and all apparel pieces are designed and made in-house in Kochi. The sarees are sourced from weaving clusters across India and curated personally by Celia.
Today, Korvai has evolved into a couture label — one where every piece, whether born at a loom in Kanchipuram or in the Korvai studio in Kochi, reflects the same founding conviction: that what we wear should endure.

The Name
Korvai
/ kor·vai / · Tamil origin
From the Tamil weaving tradition of Kanchipuram. The Korvai technique joins two separately woven pieces — the body and the border — by interlocking warp and weft threads without any knot or seam. A precision that takes two weavers working in unison, and produces a join so seamless it disappears.
The Three-Shuttle Weave
Also called the three-shuttle weave, the Korvai technique requires three separate shuttles and two weavers operating simultaneously. It is one of the most labour-intensive techniques in Indian handloom and is the primary mark of authenticity of a genuine Kanjivaram saree.
A Mark of Authenticity
A true Korvai saree cannot be replicated by printing or machine-weaving. The contrast between body and border is structural, not cosmetic — each woven separately and interlocked by hand.

Celia Palathinkal launches Korvai in Kochi with a curated edit of intricate brocade Banarasi sarees — bringing back a love for Banarasi tradition in Kerala. The first collection of 24 pieces sells out through Instagram and word of mouth.
